Model of a building by « Le Corbusier »

    Context :

The goal of this project was to design a technical element for a new museum, dedicated to the architect « Le Corbusier » in Poissy.

Goals and steps of the project :

    • Determine which technical elements are present in a museum. Determine which ones can be designed by an industrial designer. And finally choose one.
    • Propose ideas for creations to the director of the museum.
    • Design the chosen creative idea, make 3D renderings and propose a budget.

    Creative process :

My research on Le Corbusier allowed me to understand how his architecture was revolutionary. The structure of Le Corbusier’s buildings is completely different from other buildings and this is what allows him to achieve such architectural feats. I therefore said to myself that it was important to inform the visitor of the museum about these specificities and I decided to propose technical elements allowing visitors to understand them.
To show the structural differences between Le Corbusier’s buildings, I had three ideas:

    • A model whose facades are transparent or opaque on demand thanks to the use of liquid crystal glass. This technology makes it possible to discover the internal structure of the building and its architecture.
    • A removable model composed of different parts (structure and apartments in particular). The apartments fit together in the structure like drawers.
    • A game of the 7 differences between two models, one of a radiant city and the other of a typical building of the time.

In agreement with my tutor, I decided to design the removable model.

    Villa savoye (Poissy)
    Cité Radieuse (Marseille)

    The puzzle model :

    Design :

Le Corbusier’s apartments are arranged in the structure of the building like drawers. The structure and the apartments are therefore two separate rooms and it is the structure that supports the weight of the building. This allows for larger windows, for example. In the other buildings, everything is designed in one piece and the facade of the apartments supports the weight of the building.
So I designed a model on SolidWorks respecting Le Corbusier’s architecture, with distinct apartments and structure. I have used colors on the model to help visitors visualize the principles of Le Corbusier’s architecture using a legend that will be displayed next to the model.

    Production and budget:

    • The model is 270x48x144cm (1/50th scale of the Cité Radieuse in Marseille).
    • 3D printing of 40 apartments (20 rising duplexes in pink and 20 descending duplexes in red)
    • Assembly of PVC plates and profiles to make the structure
    • 3D printing of structural details
With these production techniques, the total manufacturing cost amounts to approximately 9000€.
